AB OBJECTIVE: To study usual practices of feminization amon transvestites
and to establish the relationship between the application of silicone
and the HIV infection. METHODS: A random sub-sample size 75 was drawn
from a sample transvestites included by peer recruitment on an AIDS
Prevention Study Cohort. A standard quastionnaire was applied from
october to december 1993. Results from HIV tests were availabe from 70
subjects. RESULTS: 52 (71.4%) transvestites used silicone (50 of them
with HIV tests). Only 3 (5.8%) of them has injected silicone by doctors.
The application for 49 (94.2%) was done by others transvestites which
used industrial silicone and a non-disposable syringe and needle. The
same kit was used many times without appropriate care. 29 (58.0%) of the
silicone users and 5 (25.0%) between the non-users were HIV positive (X2
= 6.227; p < 0.02). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The application of
silicone may be an additional factor of HIV transmission. A multivariate
analysis is being conducted to establish potential confounders.
